If you follow AI news, you will quickly realize that the life nowadays has become a never-ending back and forth tension between two trends:

Every once in a while (maybe $\approx$6 months or so) hunanity achieves AGI for the first time… one more time… At this point I have lost count of how many times AGI has been achieved either internally or externally. The AI chatbots that you use today are apparently the same as a PhD-level human being, if not better. Big companies state things like this and then drop the mic on the stage before going to get more funding and investment for their next AGI reveal. What is interesting is that from the statements they make it seems like apparently they have figured out how to measure intelligence. Can you guess how? Standartized tests and benchmarks, you say? Oh, I hope not, because if these ways of measuring intelligence was successful academic institutions wouldn’t lose their credibility over these bulshit knowledge assessment strategies in the first place. I wonder whether the smell of sarcasm in the air is stronger or the stupidity of the AGI claims being made based on standartized tests. Answering multiple-choice quizzes has never been this important for the AI companies, frankly speaking.

No, AGI is not here. It has never been. But if you told this to x-risk guys out there, they would be very upset; they wouldn’t be able to write sci-fi stories over this stuff anymore.

The “AGI is here” trend is often followed by “AGI will kill us” trend. X-risk – the existensial risk… There are certain people that just spawn out of nowhere and then starts talking about the x-risk sci-fi nonstop. They often push their own versions of the x-risk narratives without scientifically backed up justifications. The arguments typically go like “losing control is bad, too smart means too dangerous, there is no reason to keep dumber beings around” and other similar very vibe-justified statements.

No, x-risk is not here. But if you told this to the x-risk folks out there, they would be very upset; they get upset all the time; they ARE upset all the time…
